Reticulation Repairs in Brabham
Last week we were helping Brian with some reticulation repairs in Brabham. Brian was finding none of the rear stations in his yard were working, which included 2 lawn stations and a zone for a vegetable patch.
First thing we check when a group of stations isn’t operational is the resistance (or ohms) at the controller, if there is no resistance at the coil then a cut cable is more likely or a disconnected ‘common’ wire.
No resistance to any of the solenoids in the backyard as suspected, so locating the solenoids is a crucial next step – utilising the Armada pro 800 valve locating wand we found the valves grouped together in the middle of the back lawn. They had all seen better days, with rust present on all the coils and frayed wires evident around the solenoids.
We suggested to Brian that it would be a good idea if we replace the solenoids initially as they had all come to the end of their lifespan. Once replaced with Irritrol BSP valves, we had resistance to the two lawn stations, however not the station that ran the vegetable patch.
We came to the conclusion that somewhere between the controller and the other station, the wire had perished or been cut. The perfect appliance to use in this instance is an Add – a – station wiring kit pro, basically turning one live wire into two stations meaning all stations operate independently but only one cable is necessary.
A big job but we got there in the end and Brian was happy that he can plant some winter vegetables and have them watered whilst still in the warmer months.
